Gender Socialization & The “Good Mother” Construct

About the project

Our work is situated at the crossroads between motherhood and gender socialization studies. We examine mothers with adolescent daughters. Specifically we follow mothers’ voices, listen for mothers’ sense of themselves through the ways they speak of themselves, describe relational struggles, and explain their relationships with their daughters. In our research we strive to unpack the assumptions we may have as to what it means for mothers to have a voice and to be present in relationships with their daughters. This work is guided by two overarching research questions:

  1. How do mothers resist the “good mother” construct in the raising of their daughters?

  2. How do mothers accommodate to the “good mother” construct in the raising of their daughters?
